Star Wars anyone?

Postby Nikola » Wed Dec 22, 2010 3:42 pm

I know that everyone had a personal experience with this classic.
That's my favorite movie amongst hundreds of other great movies.
I love it because it's simple, it's perfect and solid on every level of people-audience communication... just as the great pyramids;)

I sometimes wonder: what if our ancestors were just like the star wars universe inhabitants? Not just technologically advanced and wise and noble at the same time... but something more?
How far fetched would it be to imagine bunch of jedi levitating huge stones and master Yoda floating around on his vimana? ;)
But that would be before the dark times, before the empire...

:D

I loved it, I was 25 when it came out and went to see it in a grand old theater that was built in the 1920's. Everybody was pretty much speechless, it was really something, the fantastic special effects and the story was really epic. Wow and then you had the fun of waiting for the next 2 to come out.
The 3 after that, not so much!
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!

The theater I saw it in was a second run one as I did not see it first run. However, they took advantage of this by charging $3 a person back then, when they usually charged $1.

I remember taking my boys to see the reissue in the theaters, and they loved watching it on the huge screen in digital sound like it was meant to be seen.

I took a blonde to it on a first date..... she came out and said, "I didn't understand the movie.... there was all that flashy light stuff going on."

Needless to say, that was our last date.....

The original Star Wars Trilogy is the basis for why I wanted to become a film maker. My earliest memory is of watching a copy of Empire Strikes Back on VHS back in 1989/1990, from there on end it kicked my imagination into overdrive and it is one of the things I am most grateful for during my lifetime.

Then the prequels came out and destroyed it all, this for me was the begining of the end. They even effected the originals by having Hayden Christensen replacing Sebastian Shaw, (which left me in shock for days to come, and not in a good way) to the terrible CGI which will never come close to being as immersive and realistic looking as the miniature models, puppets and proper built sets.

Now the only original copies you can get on DVD are the worn out and poorly formated versions, which is a load of BS because in 1995 remastered versions were released on VHS ( cleaned up sound and film, not to be confused with the "special" editions that came out in 97/98 ), however they were classed as limited editions and It was just lucky I got them for Christmas that year they were released, "before the dark times, before the prequels".

In fact the only movies I would dare put before others as my all time favorite movies are as following:

- (Shared number one spot) "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" and "The Dark Knight"
- (Shared number two spot) "Star Wars: A New Hope", "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" and "Batman Begins"

For me that is a pretty large step because there are so many good movies out there that it is difficult to place one in front of the other in terms of favouritism. On the flip side same goes for all the terrible films out there (most of which came after the millenium hit).

Final summation: Star Wars has been made into something other than what it originally was. Look at Star Wars today and you'll see it looks and feels nothing like the Star Wars that originally was. In fact the Star Wars of today (prequels, Clone Wars, KOTOR etc) looks and feels like a completely different universe/franchise. There is so much of the BS Star Wars of today that it is basically wiping the original Star Wars out of existence, in otherwords the originals are burried under miles upon miles of prequel crap that soon no one is going to be able to remember the originals.

Same here. I didn't know back then what would I do with my life. The only thing that I really liked were movies and books. No sport, no science, nothing. G.Lucas and St.Spielberg were, are and always will be my personal jesuses. Even when in university - most of my fellow students wanted to be like D.Lynch, F.Fellini, I.Bergman etc. Only me and bunch of outsiders were admiring Spielberg, Lucas, M.Scorsese and other not so "classical" directors.

I just like you, do not like the so called expanded universe. It seems like it was created only to give a way to a bigger franchise. I only stick to the original trilogy.

I know what you mean, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis, Ridley Scott, John McTiernan were all Hereos to me and in a way they still are. However I would never have thought most of these film makers would go from my hereos to people I despise in one way or another, whether it is because they let their ego go to their heads or just sell themselves out right to gimmicks (3D, CGI etc) and money (paper, credit etc). Now the only film maker of today I look up to and class as my hero is Christopher Nolan... But if history as taught me anything is that nothing lasts forever.

As for the "expanded universe", it is a bunch of halfwits writing for a universe they do not understand, and again Star Wars is ruined by it.

I watched The Empire Strikes Back in the cinema in the UK where I lived at the time...I was 5 and had really enjoyed Star Wars on VHS...my brother (who was 3) and I had loads of the original SW toys and I was the proud owner of the Millennium Falcon :D (Return of the Jedi my fave).

I cared nothing for the 3 prequels that came out, though I did watch them in the cinema...

Hey Lunar...........we blonds love shiny flashy things. :D

I went to Sho West with some of our employees and we got to meet George Lucas. Super nice guy, very down to earth (unlike his movies!)

The thing that REALLY grinds my gears about the prequel trilogy is the fact that Yoda, Mace Windu and MANY other POWERFUL Jedi masters were in the presence of Palpatine on more than just a few occasions and not a single one of them could sense the dark aura that surrounded him...i mean come on...even if Palpatine was powerful enough that he could cloud the Judgement of a Jedi Master, or shroud himself and keep him self hidden...how the hell can he hide it when he's in the same room as a Jedi Master as powerful as Yoda when even a Jedi Knight had the ability to sense the force in others?!?!

that alone made a complete and utter mockery of the Jedi council.

WAAAAY to many inconsistencies to list but i'll list a few more soon.
