Massive 8.9 Earthquake near Japan

Massive 8.9 earthquake 80 miles from Honshu, Japan - up until this post they have had 27 aftershocks in the range of 5.2 to 7.1 magnitude.

Tsunamis devastating the area and heading for many countries along the Pacific Ocean. All Pacific Ocean Countries are under Tsunami warnings. Expected to reach California approximately 9:00 a.m. PST.

Ring of fire especally active in the past few weeks.. many larger than normal earthquakes might want to stock up on some canned goods, not saying its the apocolypse or anything but we are definitely experiencing a period of heightened activity,, they say this is the largest quake in japans history since records started.
UsGS sight has records worldwide but dont freak out when you see it because along the ring of fire smaller quakes are an everyday thing just that the larger ones have picked up.

Holy moly! this is not good at all. that is a massively strong earthquake.
We live on the west coast, things are really a buzz here this morning!

I just turned on the local news, a Tsunami is expect to hit Hawaii in about 30 minutes. People are moving to higher ground.

Well, I imagine the U.S is next on the disaster list, wonder if it will be an earthquake or volcano or another jump in gas prices:) Sending my thoughts, and sympathy to those out west who have been affected by the earthquake and tsunamis.

I read an artical stating on March 19th the moon will be the closest its been to earth in 18 yrs, and one guy thinks that this will cause major natural disasters, wonder if he's right?

I'm betting it will go into the hundred thousands, because their population in that area was around 1 million, and they didn't have any kind of warning, or not much of a warning. It's really sad, I watched one video that showed cars driving down the road and getting swept away...it brought tears to my eyes.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Japanese people....this is a horrible tragedy but they are a strong and proud people and they will recover from this, however it will take years maybe even decades. Forget about Libya the USA needs to send as much help as we can to Japan immediately.

I havent heard much on the news about this aspect, but this happened yesterday afternoon when these people were at work and the impression I got from a contact of Fox news is that, they have no transportation or phone land and cell are down and so I believe many of these people are still seperated from their families and no idea if their loved ones are safe, a dark and sad day for these people indeed. It may get worse yet if they are unable to tend to these radiation leaks and nuclear reactor cooling problems compiled with noxious fumes from refinery and other fires, they are by no means in the clear. The very large aftershock waves are mag 6 and greater. I dont believe in gods who need crafts or a god in the conventional sense but I do believe in the power of love and prayer and these people need that and whatever help we might be.

Oh yes, I agree and this is just the beginning of their problems. If you watch any of the news footage, it is almost unbelieveable how devasting those waves were/are.

We are watching the news from Japan, man it is just awful.

A couple of places on the west coast here, southern Oregon, Brookings, and Cresent City, Calif. got hit by a large wave. Two people died. One guy and some friends went to take pictures and the dock got wiped out. What a dumb thing to do, go see the tsunami.
The Marina in Brookings got devastated by the tsunami this morning. A guy with a bad heart died on his fishing bost.

Oh boy we are about 120 miles from the coast, right by a big Valcano, Mt. St. Helens has been rumbling lately too. More so that usual! Let's just hope Mt. Rainier does not wake up.

I'm thinking anyone who lives near or on a fault line or near a volcano should be on alert and be ready to leave in a hurry.

There was a boat off the coast of Japan that had over a hundred people on it, and it just disappeared, I wonder if it was the one caught up in the whirlpool. Speaking of the whirlpool, it was said that a whirlpool is not something that usually happens during this type of thing, so why was there a whirlpool? It was also said that there are four trains that are unaccounted for, but they didn't say if they were passenger trains or not.

I was up all night watching the news on this, just got up from a 5 hour nap. It's a horrific sight to see the damages now that it is daylight there. Check out the USGS site on earthquakes. I have been watching this site every day for many many years, it certainly seems more active in the last 5-6 years than I remember in the past.

Large quakes like this create two things; added pressure on some areas of the Pacific ring of fire fault lines, and less pressure on others (which seems good but actually causes sand and smaller debris the chance to lubricate the fault lines causing either less intense quakes, or more frequent quakes)

We have a Japanese foreign exchange student here at our local High School - she has yet to get in touch with her family in Yamagata, Honshu, Japan.

The biggest danger so far is from a few nuclear plants that were affected by the earthquake. Also, the shock of the scenes of the tsunami waves destroying everything in its wake.

Could the dead fish in Redondo Beach have been a precurser to the quake? This is really making me wonder if all or most of the recent animal deaths might be connected to the earths behavior.

Interesting theory, Theory. I can't recall any other major sea life death event proceeding an earthquake, but it would be worth looking into.

That is really something, I can't tear myself away from the news.

I keep wondering when we are going to get the big one here on the west coast, we are long overdue for it. I remember the great 9.2 earthquake Alaska had in '64 very well. We had a pretty bad one in '65, I was in Jr. High School and will never forget that day! And we had one ten years ago too, our house creaked and swayed so much my husband ran outside with the dog, he thought the house was going to fall down! I was at work, in the basement of a 3 story building! not fun at all.

This is also a good time to reminds folks to have emergency supplies on hand, water, food, flashlights, short wave radios, lots of extra batteries. I think those of us who like in earthquake zones and also live near active volcanos are a bit better prepared for disasters, natural or otherwise!

These people have been rocked by 5+ aftershocks every 5 to 15 minutes since onset according to USGS data, I cant imagine how youd get your bearings and start any recovery process in a situation that has yet to relent.
It seems unrelated but for the past few days I have been feeling strange with a lot of mouth pain and upon further investigation so have others I know and we are not fully aware of the different ways our planet affects our body so Im curious if anyone else is experiencing these symptoms.
I woke up when this happened around 3 am my time and turned on the news out of the blue, we do not watch the news in my house as I disagree with the sensationalism and incomplete and filtered content but I have been glued to this ragic event. I cant help but wonder with the recent volcanic activity and earthquakes if this is only the beginning.

83 aftershocks in 21 hours is the total now, just from CNN. I can't even begin to imagine the fear factor for these poor people and maybe the 8.9 quake was not the big one, maybe it is just getting ready for a worse one to hit.
Now they said on CNN that there have been 180 aftershocks!

We are not news watchers either, this is a big exception in our house as well.

Actually I have been feeling extremely good this week, but I have been on an emotional rollor coaster prior to this week, job related, but that has settled down.

I can't help but feel this big quake and the on going aftershocks could definetly be the precursor to more natural disasters.
And living on the Pacific Ring of Fire doesn't do anything to ease my fears!

I sure wish I could ease your mind but I went out and bought some more canned goods last night and I live in the midwest but with quakes in ark. and OK Im a little nervous, there was one in MO but thats fairly normal. Unfortunately for the past couple months Ive had the feeling that somethings coming and Im one of those different sort of folks who has yet to be wrong with the weird feelings and such (woke up and turned on the news in the middle of night for no apparent reason). They say theres a first time for everything and I sure hope Im wrong and Im just coming down with something. Ill sure be glad when this is over and Im a world away, cant imagine what must be running through peoples heads in Japan.
The one report said that an island had been moved 8 feet by this event, I cant even begin to imagine what will happen to Japan if this doesnt stop. Between the quake and the Tsunami and the fallout there may not be much Japan left when it ends, we are truly experiencing an historical event and that leaves me feeling only somber and saddened. Thats sure not the kind of history we are hoping to witness and the knowledge of having an opportunity to witness the greatness of human resilience when this ends seems litttle comfort.

We are buying more supplies this morning too, we have been gathering emergencies supplies for a while now anyway.
Obviously if a tsunami hits an area, nothing is going to do you any good, but we are quite far from the coast.

I went through an extremely paranoid stage last summer. I was consumed with dread and foreboding, with bad feelings and I could feel something coming as well.
But for some strange reason the feeling has left me, perhaps it is acceptance and doing what I can to be ready, if there is indeed such a thing, but I have a definite sense of calmness and actually some inner strength that has taken over.

We were just watching people be rescued, it is gut-wrenching and heart warming at the same time.

They say there are 9,500 people missing from the one town that was hit the hardest.

A building at a nuclear power plant damaged in Friday's earthquake has exploded. It wasn't a nuclear explosion, but officials in Japan are releasing few details beyond that. There are reports that radioactivity has been detected both inside and outside the power plant. So far, it looks like five reactors in Fukushima were damaged by the largest known earthquake in Japan's history

A couple of months ago I ran across a map charting the rate and affect of Chinas pollution on the U.S. and the trade winds bring all of their pollution right into the U.S. at the northwest coast right down through the midwest via the "Jetstream" and it is impacting us so unfortunately Japans fallout will travel along the same path. I have been watching Fox news channel and earlier they very breifly metioned Chernobuls impact and ensuing cloud engulfing europe and I should gather the answer there is yes this will definitely affect us, Iwould not go outside after tomorrow for at least a week and try to expose myself as little as posssible. I would also limit my sun exposure all summer as radiation traps the suns rays and tends to make them more intense and epect a warmer wetter summer especially with the increased volcanic activity, Hawaii, Indonesia and Japan spewing ash for more than 2 weeks before the quake.
I believe I found the pollution map in google maps and think it might be prudent for us to reseach chernobul more fully although Im not confident any government would be willing to fully disclose the extent to which they have essentially poisoned those around them. Please excuse me if Ive misspelled Chernobul spellcheck is never very good with names.
