Changing Faces

Postby siren13 » Wed Jul 27, 2011 5:04 am

I would have posted this in the entertainment forum but it isn't just about celebrity folk so I left it here. I was recently looking at a photograph of one of my favorite -inspiring- musicians Tori Amos. She has been the main reason for me deciding not to let my mother sell my piano when I went to college - I started to play it again. She has been an inspiration to millions of young women for years for her edgier ideas on religion, sex, politics men =)

She was never one that I would have ever thought would have decided to go under the knife and now she is almost creepy looking. For years it was the pounding of "be happy with whom you are" speaches. But then going under the knife sort of ruins my 17 year long love of her and her music. Musically she is a genious, but when people start thinking so badly about themselves that they feel they need these things done to them- it really concerns me with the way girls look up to people not just celebrity folk, but could be teachers, parents, even significant others. I mean when do we start thinking for ourselves and stop caring what we look like?

I am officially over 158 pounds and I don't care who knows. three years ago I was about 140 - Yes I have gained a few. But I also like my hips and thighs and all that. I have days when I wish I were a size 2 but I know that isnt' me. I exercise, have muscle but not super model material. I don't ever expect to be.

I have seen many of my beautiful male and female friends try to change their appearance because they don't look like magazine material. I have a friend in graphic art that told me how they photoshop and airbrush all those photos that even if you are stick thin and have a decent body you still have imperfections.. last I checked that is what made us human.

So when I saw that she had changed her face where it almost made her look "frozen" her eyes, cheeks and chin all look different now. I miss the old Tori. I want to aks her.. "who is it that made you feel so badly about your beautiful self?"

Maybe a celeb can say they need to constantly look good for the money- okay fine. They do it for their jobs, but what about every day ordinary people? What do they do it for? Is it to look like a celeb? The two go hand in hand.

I am not talking about reconstructive surgery for victims of violent crimes, accidents, disabilities at all. So don't take it that way. I don't even think it is wrong to have manicures, wear make up, use lotions and wrinkle creams, but can't we all just age gracefully? No wrinkle cream is going to make you lose 30 pounds, or re do your entire face where you automatically look ten years younger. I know this because I was a Mary Kay sales rep. I was always honest with my customers. Frankly, clean skin can do wonders for you. Not tanning in a tanning bed on a regular basis is not good for you. Lack of sleep is not good for you. Large amounts of stress is obviously not good for you. Some things can help you - but not completely change you.

lately I feel like our society is being dumbed down by all the things that are thrown at us. Probably why at 16 I stopped buying 17 magazine. It stopped me from going "Oh man I feel like a fat lard because they have all these health remedies and fat loss ideas.." I always thought girls at my school were sometimes prettier than the ones in my magazines. They were edgier, had crazy hair styles, wore concert t-shirts and talked about the cool things they did on the weekends.

I do not get this age of PERFECTION or DIE age. I don't know if we are just so into our technologies, where we can access media more than before. Maybe people have always been this superficial, they just are more likely to do something about it than they were ten years ago.

Another example was a girl I knew for years in school. Had lost over 102 pounds and she looked great. Then she was as I re call at 17 talking about a nose, chin and chest implant. I was astounded. She never went through with it because lucky for her - her parents said UH NO!!

even though she came from a wealthy family - it never happend. She is better for it now.

And if you happen to look up any of the photos of some of these celebs- I feel it is more sad than "Oh wow she looks better"

yes folks Barbie is a doll for a reason.

It is a sad truth, but many celebrities do such things to change their image when they do not sell songs or fill in concert seats anymore. They do not want to become has-beens in the business, so they will do almost anything to remain in the public eye. They need to look at what William Shatner has said on the subject: It is better to of be a has-been than a never-was.

I have seen too many performers do this and it usually is the music industry (although I can name a few actors who have done the same).

I feel the same, it is just very sad and depressing to me to see a music idol change before my eyes, not talking growing old gracefully..sad but true. Like a flower dying in the sun..

Actors are always going to be that way, still shocking to see musicians who are (not all cases but some) usually known for the style or the sound of the music and even lyrics. Tori was sexy but never known for being a great beauty. She IS beautiful to me before and after surgery. But when you go from normal looking to "plastic" I have a hard time with it. It shouldn't bother me. Yet it does. Perhaps it is something like a memory of her from my teenage years listening to her music and feeling a sort of liberation I never had till I found her. Then from her then to now, I miss her old self. If that makes sense.

I have a sort of emotional attachment to her for it. Not her fault, but maybe it is like I have been saying lately to my niece, these famous individuals are not demi-gods. They may want to be, but they can only be what we make them to us.

Just so sad to see someone transform as she has. Here is a link to a page I saw. I literally wanted to cry.

not nice photos but still...

I'm not a fan of links that dog people, but it is the only example I have to show what I am talking about.. She is pretty still don't get me wrong. But just so odd. I can't get my head around it.

Michael Jackson is the one they use to show this in the extreme, but the truth is most celebrities have had some type of work done to keep them young looking.

Joan Rivers has become a joke of herself at this point, and she cannot express any emotion with her face since she has had so much work done on it.

This made me think of Kenny Rogers.
This website is a hoot. But the really sad thing is, Kenny Rogers doesn't even look like Kenny Rogers anymore because he has had so much work done to his face.

This discussion reminds me of the face stretching scenes in the Startrek Insurrection movie, haha....

We are only human I guess. And the more $$$ people have the more time they have to do weird things to themselves.

As unfortunate as it is.
